National Geographic Cruise Adventure

An epic expedition to the Galápagos Islands with Lindblad Expeditions aboard the National Geographic Endeavor II.

The marine iguana, also called the sea iguana, saltwater iguana, or Galápagos marine iguana, is a unique species of iguana exclusively found on the Galápagos Islands. Unlike any other modern lizard, this marine reptile forages in the sea, feeding primarily on algae.

Our recent cruise expedition to the Galápagos Islands with Lindblad Expeditions aboard the luxury National Geographic Endeavor II was nothing short of extraordinary. This adventure surpassed all my expectations, revealing the true magic of the Galápagos. Accompanied by my husband Marc, we fulfilled a lifelong dream, crossing off one of our top bucket list destinations. We arrived in the coastal city of Guayaquil. After a hotel night and tour, we flew to Baltra in the Galápagos, where our naturalist staff welcome us as we begin exploring the islands.

Galapagos Wildlife Adventure

On Santa Cruz Island, Silvana serves as a point of reference to illustrate the impressive size of the giant Galápagos tortoises. Journey to the lush, green highlands to witness these magnificent creatures roaming freely at a local ranch.

The variety of animal life is astonishing. From diverse marine species, like the tiny fish that inspired Darwin’s theories, to the giant tortoises that give the islands their name, and the captivating mating rituals of blue and red-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, great frigate birds and other nesting seabirds, the Galapagos is a natural wonderland. We kayaked along shorelines and around islets, saw manta rays leap and flip before our eyes, and watched sea turtles swim playfully around our paddles. Also,we snorkeled frequently, and one afternoon, I locked eyes with a sea lion—a moment so powerful. It felt like we were part of a movie, exploring sacred lands beyond our worthiness.

“Every wildlife encounter filled me with a profound sense of gratitude. Gratitude is a daily experience in the Galapagos, and I felt incredibly fortunate to witness it first hand.”

We learned about the many endangered species endemic to the Galapagos at the Charles Darwin Research Station, operated by the Charles Darwin Foundation. This facility conducts extensive research and works tirelessly to save these species. Initially, I worried that my lack of scientific background might hinder my experience. However, Lindblad and National Geographic’s expert naturalists quickly dispelled my concerns. Their engaging stories about the islands’ formation and history captivated us, making my old geography, science, and history teachers proud! Learning beyond the classroom is invaluable. We nourish our bodies with food, our minds with education, and our hearts with love. New experiences can feed our spirit like nothing else. Hands-on learning can inspire children to become filmmakers or follow in Charles Darwin’s footsteps and develop new scientific theories.

Our voyage wasn’t just about biology and geology. As active travelers, we sought adventure in every form. The friendly staff and daily activities left nothing to be desired. Lindblad Expeditions seamlessly blended education with entertainment, activity with relaxation, and luxury with adventure.
